Das bronzene Reiterdenkmal erinnert an Feldmarschall Schwarzenberg, der in der Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig Oberbefehlshaber der verbündeten Streitkräfte gegen Napoleon I. war. In der Kanalisation, direkt unter dem Schwarzenbergplatz, wo heute der Wienfluss und die U-Bahnlinie U4 verlaufen, befand sich einst ein legendärer Obdachlosen-Unterschlupf namens Zwingburg.
